Okay folks and folkesses, I sit at a desk all day with the most inane computer program known to man and I want to burn it's binary eyes out. I maintain it was designed with the downfall of humanity (or at least the loss of mine) in mind. Skynet is real, people.
It even makes me get a little bored of music as I sit here for hours on end listening to whatever's on the 'pod, but the good thing about this is it makes me rummage through the vaguely sorted laundry basket of music that is my laptop and pick out a few things I haven't given due attention or simply not heard in an age, so here's a sample
Mansun - Six
Attack of the Grey Lantern is in my eyes one of the purest slices of pop gold to come out of Britain in the 90s. This massively ambitious follow up is like Mansun possessed with the spirit of the Wildhearts and writing songs about wanting to be a girl which for some reason I connect with more than may be deemed normal.
Black Mountain - In The Future
Their self-titled debut was a-rocking-and-a-rolling but it was in fact the acoustic number 'Stay Free' from this album that got me into them, yet I let this one sit on my harddrive like a bastard son. I am now paying it's child support by giving it heavy rotation. And it is for the most part a heavy rotation. Tasty.
White Rabbits - Fort Nightly
Got this from an awesome blog called Regnyouth which sadly no longer exists. They were meant to support TV on the Radio I believe and I listened to it once before going to the gig when I found out they were no longer playing and put it down. Like a fool. They're kinda like 90 Day Men if they cheered the fuck up.
David Bowie - Scary Monsters
What can I say, my absolute hero. Kinda like taking you're girlfriend for granted and realising what a dick you've been. I'm sorry, David, I won't ever let you down again.
Archie Bronson Outfit - Derdang Derdang
Pulling aces, plain and simple. Two guitars, a drumkit, a yelp and a Green Giant's handful of shitkicking riffs.
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
Didn't appreciate this at the time because I wanted another Chutes Too Narrow. Bloody donut that I am. 'Phantom Limb' is pretty much perfect.
The Clash - Anything
Haven't been able to listen to them for a couple of months because of my ex. The reasons we got together were pretty much A) both half Italian, B) fans of coitus and C) gay for The Clash. But fuck her, I'm taking them back.
Girls Against Boys - You Can't Fight What You Can't See
What do you get when you cross two bass players with awesomeness? Girls Against Boys. That's what. Apart from Freakonica because that album was pretty shit. However this, their last offering, will grab your tongue and pour liquid amaze-o down your throat and out your ears.
Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
Well, it's not that great but it has it's moments.
Sex Positions - Sex Positions
The single most underappreciated hardcore record ever made. This is The Shape of Punk to Come for the naughties.
And that's that.
Go dig 'em out and on 'em.
